Real “Slumdog Millionair”
Many have already watched “Slumdog Millionaire”. It is so motivating to see how much a talented person can achieve after overcoming all the obstacles. Now, let’s try to find a real life story which can correlate with the story of “Slumdog Millionaire”.
It is the story of an American kid who did not even have the chance to be with his biological parents. Grown up as an adapted child, he was a loner and confused about the direction of his own life. But the boy just wanted to see a computer which would be as simple as a toy. Everyone from a student to a shopkeeper should be able to use it in their day to day business. So it was sleepless nights for four years for him. And for all his employees.
Year 1984. That company launched new model “Macintosh”. A “mouse” operated graphics-based computer. Before that, “Mouse” was almost unknown to everybody. So, suddenly computer operation became so easy, so simple.
He, Steve Jobs wanted the best advertisement for the best product. He wanted to spend 1 million dollar for a single advertisement. Not everyone in his company was keen to spend that much on a single ad. But Steve was determined.
1984 SUPERBOWL. An advertisement for a few minute that was showing a big TV screen where a Big Brother type character was giving a speech and everybody was just so scared. Then an woman was seen to come with a brass head axe while running. Security tried to hunt her down. But before that she was able to throw the axe towards the TV screen. Screen exploded and everybody was lighten up by the explosion. And then the message appeared “"On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like 1984."
After superbowl was over, people were discussing more about that Ad rather than that night’s game!It was like amazing experience. !!! Later so many TV channels had to show this ad many times considering people’s demand. This was a landmark in the history of advertise
The advertisement was not exaggeration anyway. Macintosh created history.
In the mean time, another important thing happened in that company. His company is very big now and he had to find out a good administrator for this. He thought that then president of Pepsi Company would be good choice for this. But pepsi was still bigger than Apple. So that guy was not kin to leave pepsi. Then Steve asked him, “Do you want to sell sugared water to kids for the rest of your life or you want to be a part of the change.” The president of pepsi did not think for the second time. After that he became the administrator of the most dynamic company of the world.
3-4 years passed by. Steve is now 28-29 year old. Already part of history. Role model. Multimillionaire. But nobody likes him in his own company. Everybody was terrorized by him. He is still “the terrible kid” In 1985 Apple virtually dumped Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs, 30 year old person, famous, charismatic, but fired from his own company the company he started only ten years back.
In the next ten years he was associated with two company: NEXTEP and PIXAR. Steve bought the animation film making company in 1o million dollar and later sold it to Disney company in a few billion dollars (that is 100 times the value of purchase price).
In this ten year period apple degraded like anything. Computer market is now lead by Dell computer.
Year 1996. Apple is no longer a profitable company. It decided to put steve back to his own company. The company he started 20 years back. This time someone asked Michael Dell, CEO of DELL computer company that what he would do with Apple company if he would run this company. Dell replied “I would shut down” Steve did not say a single word after hearing this. He said after 10 years. By that time Apple launched another product: IPOD. Again Apple becomes a profitable company. Apple’s market value crossed Dell’s Market value. So Seve wrote in a letter “it seems Dell is not good in predicting future”
Then came in market the famous IPHONE. Again Apple. Again Steve Jobs. Again History. Now Apple’s market value is 5 times of Dell computer.
In this time of economic downturn when everybody’s worry is where to get cash flow, Apple big pain is what to do with its 30 billion dollar or so extra cash.
Steve receives $1/month from this company. Much lower than Wall Street’s famous policymakers .
Few months back there was a rumor that Steve Jobs died. Immediately Apple fell by 10%. Billion dollar just from a rumor.
This is the story of Steve Jobs, founder of Apple computer. We all know the success story of Apple Company. It is the first to start mouse based graphics based computer, it is the company that launched ipod and iphone. However it is hard to believe that all were done under the guidance of a person who was a college dropout, who did not have any resources and who started those only at the age of 21. He is Steve Jobs, college drop out, nothing but a “slumdog” if compared with a brilliant scientists and a big business persons. But he shaped the computer industry in 70s. I felt his story is a real life version of the story of “Slumdog Millionair”
